In a filthy, loveless future, a guard and a worker are suddenly infected by the disease called love.

Sometime, in the distant past, the threat of nuclear war was so great that people went into hiding in bunkers and nuclear shelters. Since then, they have never gone outside again. Today, around the year 2418, the reasons why people ever went into hiding have been forgotten through the generations. They know only one thing: outside is bad, inside is good.
For inside is The Machine. And as long as The Machine is running, everything is fine in Iron Block department 0214-12. No one knows exactly what The Machine does anymore. But that makes her no less sacred.

The inhabitants of the Iron Bloc, the followers of The Machine, are divided into two groups:

The spinners: Those who spin. The spinners of department 0214-12 seem like gray shadows of people, in a world that is just as rotten as they are.

The guards: Those who ensure that the spinning takes place. Armed with clubs and stun guns and afflicted with a perpetually bad temper, they beat them up as soon as they do not spin fast enough.

That is how it has been for generations. Everything that makes a human being human has slowly disappeared. Love, too. Love has no function. The Machine does not run on love, but on sweat.

But today, something changes. Spinner Borkie becomes infected with a strange disease, a disease forgotten for centuries: love. And he is not the only one. Toetje, a guard, is also struck. She is in his belly, and he in hers. A guard and a spinner loving each other?! Inconceivable! Unacceptable! This must stop. At all costs.

Desire in the Iron Block is a story about the rediscovery of love in a world where the concept of love has simply been forgotten. The film is a childlike quest for light in the deepest darkness of an industrial hellish landscape.

It offers a counter-narrative in an increasingly polarizing world and a cry for more empathy. Although the story is absurdist, the film relentlessly holds up a mirror to us: what happens when we lose the last shred of empathy and surrender completely to an all-encompassing system?

The Babymaker

The baby maker has only one task: fertilization. He works hard to ensure offspring so that work can continue in the Iron Block. Because there is no intrinsic romantic or sexual connection between the Iron Block residents, he has been chosen for this.

He is pumped up for optimal performance his entire life. The Babymaker has a constant stream of black sap pumped into him through a tube. Because only a small percentage of the fertilization attempts are successful, he has multiple rounds to perform daily. He eats the most slop of anyone and, for that reason, is the only one with a truly full, muscular build. The guards and the Babymaker feel no sexual or romantic connection with each other.
