Toekijken is a Dutch-language arthouse short film of 12 to 15 minutes, written and directed by Joël in 't Veld as the graduation film for his studies at ROC Rijn IJssel. The film is produced under the name Different Motion Films. The story follows Daan, a 21-year-old who deals drugs to pay for his mother's medical expenses. Not by choice, but because he sees no other way out. When his best friend Luuk becomes addicted to the drugs Daan supplies him and eventually dies, Daan is the one there. The film revolves around guilt and grief, written in a somber, realistic tone without moralizing. Shooting takes place in and around Arnhem with a small crew of three to five people. An actress aged 45 to 60 for the role of Daan's mother. She is ill—the exact cause remains unspecified in the film—and does not know how her son scrapes together the money for her treatment. Her role is small but weighty: she is the reason Daan does what he does. We are looking for someone who radiates dignity without pity. No pathos, no acting about illness. Just a woman trying to stay afloat. Limited number of filming days.
