Kairos (working title) is a short drama film about our constantly accelerating society and the need to escape it by living more in the moment and letting go of clock time.

I am Job te Winkel, 22 years old, and I study Photography, Film and the Digital at St. Joost in Breda.

23-year-old Kai is a driven, structured, and performance-oriented aspiring writer. With tight schedules and a fixed routine, he tries to keep a grip on his life, yet he feels that time keeps slipping away from him. He also struggles to get into a creative flow while writing his new book. Kai has been living on his own in the city for a year now and is rarely home with his mother, Anneke, who has trouble letting him go. This weekend, he is home for the first time in three months for an appointment with a bird expert at a nearby nature center. Kai is fascinated by birds and the freedom they seem to possess, something he tries to capture in his new book. When the appointment is unexpectedly canceled, Kai is left with an empty afternoon. To make good use of his time, he decides to enter the bird hide. There, he tries to capture everything he sees with his camera and notebook, but time and again, the moment slips through his fingers. Frustrated, he gives up. Only when he stops trying and just looks does he truly manage to be in the moment for the first time, something he turned out to have needed all along.

KAI: Kai is a 20-year-old structured young man and aspiring writer. He is obsessed with planning his day; this habit ensures he is constantly aware of time—what time it is, by what time he wants to finish a specific task, and how much time he has left for the rest of his planned activities. But this obsessive behavior is taking its toll: time flies, and Kai fears he doesn't have enough of it. His biggest nightmare is waking up tomorrow and suddenly being 40. As a budding, achievement-oriented writer, Kai is on a constant quest for creativity and innovative insights.

ANNEKE: Anneke is the mother of protagonist Kai and a caring, interested woman in her fifties. Since the death of her husband, five years after Kai's birth, she has always had to work hard as a single mother to keep everything going and raise her son. As a result, she had little room to truly enjoy life and reflect on his childhood, which, in her view, has flown by. Now that Kai is mature and no longer lives at home, Anneke realizes just how much she misses that presence. At the same time, she feels regret that she was less able to live in the moment in the past.
