Started his script career in 1991 at Doctor Proctor Scripts, later Scriptstudio and worked on GTST, OnM and Goudkust until 2000. After training as an all-round script editor at the Binger Filmlab, he worked for several years as a dramaturge at the NCRV. In 2006 he was editor-in-chief of the telenovela Lotte and in 2013 he wrote 35 episodes of the scripted reality series Achter Gesloten Deuren. In 2007 Maarten founded Scriptdesk together with Eveline Verwoerd. Scriptdesk coaches writers in developing a screenplay for film and television, but also for documentary and transmedia projects. In addition, Scriptdesk brings writers, directors and producers together in network and development meetings (De Proeftuin) and the online platform Scriptbank.
